Plate holders: folding or removable?
Both make the rear end short. The difference shows when you want the plate out of the way. Here is what each one does and which holder suits your bike.
What the difference is
Folding: The plate folds away and the holder stays on the bike. It's quick and there's nothing to stow.
Removable: The whole plate unit comes off. Almost nothing stays on the bike and the rear end is clean, for photos or a track day for example. You do have to put the removed part somewhere.
On the road, the plate must always sit in the right position. What applies there is in our post Motorcycle plate holders.
Both in one: the V3
With the V3 plate holder you don't have to choose. It folds up and also comes off with the snap-in. Only the housing with the light stays on the bike. A spring keeps the plate under tension so it doesn't rattle.
You choose between two versions:
| Standard | Lock | |
|---|---|---|
| Folding in | quick, with one hand | also with a spring |
| Unfolded | doesn't click in place | also clicks firmly in place |
| Right for you if | you want to fold it often and quickly | the plate shouldn't fold in by itself |
The V3 is available for KTM, Husqvarna, Beta, Fantic and Sherco. For other bikes there is the Universal in two sizes, 135 or 115 mm wide.
For Stark Varg and Sur-Ron
These bikes have their own holders:
- Stark Varg EX/SM: folding holder that clicks in place with a pin in both positions. You keep using the indicators, tail light and plate light, with no soldering.
- Sur-Ron Ultra Bee: holder in the wheel well, compact instead of under the seat.
- Sur-Ron Light Bee (from 06/2024): holder under the seat that replaces the bulky stock bracket.
Quick decision
- You want both and ride a KTM, Husqvarna, Beta, Fantic, Sherco or another bike: V3.
- The plate should sit firmly when unfolded: V3 Lock.
- You ride a Stark Varg or Sur-Ron: the holder for your model.
