Supermoto conversion in Switzerland: what you have to report
Contents
Turning an enduro into a supermoto sounds simple: smaller wheels on, done. But in Switzerland many of these changes have to be reported and inspected. This is what the ordinance on the technical requirements for road vehicles (VTS) says, as of 1 January 2026.
The basic rule
As the vehicle's keeper, you must report changes to the registration authority without delay. Changed vehicles are then inspected (VTS Art. 34 para. 2). That means the road traffic office of your canton.
The changes the VTS names explicitly
| Change | Typical in a supermoto conversion |
|---|---|
| Wheels not approved for your vehicle type | 17-inch wheel set |
| Brake system | bigger brake disc, second caliper, rear hand brake |
| Drivetrain | different sprocket |
| Exhaust not approved for the type | sport exhaust |
| Dimensions, weights, wheelbase, track width | depending on the conversion |
| Anything that changes emissions or noise | depending on the conversion |
On top of that come "all other significant changes". What counts in a given case is decided by the inspection office.
What to clear up first
- Ask before you buy. Call the road traffic office and say exactly what you want to convert. Also ask which documents they need and what the inspection costs, as the canton sets that.
- Collect the documents for the parts. Approval marks and manufacturer details help at the inspection.
- Check the rear end at the same time. Plate, lights and indicators must be right after the conversion. The values are in our posts on plate holders and indicators.
What it costs with us
The parts for road use come as a kit. Prices as of November 2026:
- Road kit KTM: CHF 166.90
- Road kit Husqvarna: CHF 159.90
- Road kit Beta: CHF 147.90
The kit includes the V3 plate holder with E-approved lights, four LED indicators with resistors and mirrors, with the plug and play indicator adapters on KTM and Husqvarna as well.
For the Sur-Ron there is the complete 17-inch wheel set for the Ultra Bee and for the Light Bee X. It is meant for use off public roads. For a registered vehicle, the wheel and tyre combination must be inspected and entered in the vehicle registration document. Whether that is possible is decided case by case by the road traffic office.
Good to know
This text summarises the VTS and doesn't replace an inspection or legal advice. Whether a conversion passes is decided by your cantonal inspection office. Other countries have other rules.
